Chapter 16
Roc
Things were getting back to my kind of normal, without Desa Rae. I hadnât been bugging and I played by her rules when it came to Chassidy. Once she was done spending time at my crib, I dropped her off at home and drove off without going inside. Liâl Roc had been still making his weekly visits, too, and if I couldnât pick him up, Vanessaâs mother would do it for me.
Iâd been spending most of my time at the shop. During times like this, I always picked up my money game. Money was flowing through the shop. The fellas were working their asses off, especially since I was there around the clock. I even hired Dre to come in and do some work for me and he loved being on my payroll. Hell, everybody did, and this was definitely the place to be.
As I was in my office, flipping through a magazine with tires and rims, I heard my name being called over the intercom.
âRockay,â Craig shouted for a second time. âThese fools in here passinâ gas and stankinâ up the shop area. All the gas gone âcause some of these cars in here to blow up.â
Everybody started cracking up. It felt good to have a laugh every now and then, but I ignored Craig. I wasnât about to touch the shop area, at least for the next thirty minutes or so.
Getting thirsty, I got up to get a soda. Romo came up to me while I was at the soda machine.
âMan, I need you to come take a look at this car. I ainât never seen this much rust on no car, and if Mr. Walls wants his car painted, he gonâ have to up the dollars to have all this rust patched up first.â
Dressed in my navy blue coveralls and black rubber boots, I followed Romo into the shop area. He pointed out the rust spots on Mr. Wallsâs 1956 Cadillac, which he wanted painted a shimmering gold.
âLook at this,â Romo said, lightly kicking a big rust spot near his trunk. The car had more rust spots along the sides and some on the hood and front as well.
I rubbed my chin. âI mean, we can fix the rust spots, but I wouldnât put a lick of paint on that until those spots are taken care of. Redo his estimate and Iâll call to let him know how much more this gonâ hurt his pockets.â
âThat fool got it. He ainât hurtinâ for no money, so hit âem hard.â
I walked away to where Gage was kneeling on the ground, looking for something underneath a car. âWhat you lookinâ for?â I asked. âIf you canât see, use the lift to raise it.â
âI donât feel like foolinâ with that right now. Iâm just tryinâ to see where this hissinâ sound is cominâ from.â
I got on the ground and eased underneath the car. I didnât hear anything hissing, but I did see something big crawling on the exhaust pipe.
âWhat the fuck?â I shouted and quickly rolled from underneath the car, moving away from it.
